Swimming Pace Formulas & Pool Conversions

Unlike road running, which calculates pace per kilometer or mile, aquatic sports measure effort in 100-meter (or 100-yard) splits.

  • Short Course Yards (SCY): Standard 25-yard pool commonly used in high schools and colleges in the United States.
  • Short Course Meters (SCM): 25-meter pool standard throughout Europe and international winter racing.
  • Long Course Meters (LCM): 50-meter Olympic pool standard used for summer world championships.

Q&A Knowledge Base

Swimming Pace FAQs

Practical answers to common pacing, split calculation, and training questions.

How is swimming pace calculated?
Swimming pace is standardized as the time required to cover 100 meters (or 100 yards), rather than miles or kilometers. Formula: Pace per 100m = (Total Time in Seconds ÷ Distance in Meters) × 100.
What is a good swim pace for triathletes?
For recreational sprint and Olympic-distance triathletes, a comfortable aerobic swim pace typically ranges between 1:45 to 2:15 per 100m (1:36 to 2:03 per 100yd). Competitive age-group swimmers frequently hold 1:20 to 1:35 per 100m.
What is the conversion between pace per 100 meters and 100 yards?
Because 100 meters equals 109.36 yards, swimming 100 meters requires approximately 9.36% more time than swimming 100 yards at identical speed. Multiply your 100-yard pace by 1.0936 to approximate your 100-meter pace.
What is the 'swimmer's mile'?
In competitive pool swimming, the 'mile' traditionally refers to the 1,650-yard freestyle (66 laps in a 25-yard pool) or the 1,500-meter freestyle (30 laps in a 50-meter Olympic pool), both slightly shorter than an exact statute terrestrial mile (1,609.34 meters / 1,760 yards).
