Why Average Pace Differs from Running Pace

A common misunderstanding with run-walk pacing is assuming that walking breaks will cause a dramatic collapse in race finish times. In reality:

  • Reduced Cardiac Drift: A 30 to 60-second walk allows heart rate to drop 5–12 beats per minute, preventing anaerobic lactic buildup.
  • Muscle Fiber Shift: Walking activates different muscle recruitment angles, sparing prime mover fast-twitch fibers in the calves and quads.
  • Mental Segmentation: Focusing on running for just 3 to 4 minutes at a time makes marathon-length distances mentally digestible.

Run / Walk Method FAQs

Practical answers to common pacing, split calculation, and training questions.

What is the Run-Walk-Run method?
Pioneered by 1972 US Olympian Jeff Galloway, the Run-Walk-Run strategy intersperses structured running intervals with scheduled brisk walking breaks from the very beginning of a run. By giving running muscles brief recovery windows, runners significantly reduce core fatigue, lower muscular micro-tears, and frequently finish long races faster than by attempting continuous running.
How do you calculate average pace when running and walking?
You cannot simply average the two paces directly. You must calculate the exact distance covered during the running interval, add the distance covered during the walking interval, and divide the total combined cycle time by that total combined distance: Average Pace = (Run Time + Walk Time) ÷ (Run Distance + Walk Distance).
What are common run-walk interval ratios?
Popular interval combinations include: 4:00 run / 1:00 walk, 3:00 run / 1:00 walk, 2:00 run / 30-sec walk, or 30-sec run / 30-sec walk for new runners. The optimal ratio depends on current fitness and target marathon finish time.
